Shopping
In major cities, shops trade from 9:00am - 5:30pm, Monday to Friday and in the weekends. Most will have a late night which is usually a Thursday or Friday. Some of the larger supermarket chains have stores that are open 24/7.
Food and Wine
New Zealand has an agricultural economy and, as such, meat, seafood, vegetables, fruit, cheeses and wine are abundant and of very good quality. With a diverse culture comes diverse eating establishments, and there are many restaurants and cafés in New Zealand that serve great food including Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Thai, and Malaysian, along with our unique Pacific fusion cuisine.
Look out for the traditional lamb, trim-pork and venison; salmon, crayfish, oysters, mussels and scallops; avocado, asparagus and kumara (sweet potato); kiwifruit, apricots, boysenberries and strawberries. Our national dessert, Pavlova, is made from meringue and fresh whipped cream topped with kiwifruit or berries.
Wine and beer can be bought at liquor stores and most supermarkets. Most restaurants and cafés are licensed to sell and serve wine and beer, but some are BYO (bring your own).
