“I understand first-hand the importance of responsible interaction with the environment and how these are important to business objectives.”
Simon maintains a broad range of engineering and science interests providing detailed knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions reporting and carbon management.
After graduating from the University of Waikato in 1991 with a Masters degree in Earth Sciences, Simon gained invaluable experience across a broad range of environmental and sustainability issues through roles in local government, environmental consultancy and environmental auditing.
Simon’s interest in greenhouse gas emissions led him to specialise in carbon inventories, carbon management, carbon offsets and third party verification roles. This work included secondment to the United Kingdom to refine and pilot the carboNZero CEMARSTM product into a large supply chain and carbon project work across New Zealand.
Simon has been the director of two New Zealand adventure tourism companies operating in sensitive natural environments and has also worked in the Norwegian Fjords.
Since joining Beca in early 2009, Simon has worked on a variety of projects to assess company reporting requirements and liabilities associated with the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme, environmental and carbon due diligence audits, and the development of carbon inventories for a range of organisations and projects.
“There are many aspects of working for Beca which I find compelling including the tangible evidence of Beca’s commitment to the environment. For instance, Beca’s role in the NZ Business Council for Sustainable Development, sustainability and carbon reporting, our Green Building in Wellington and participation and support of international, national and community environmental events”.
