Senior Environmental Scientist / Auckland

Hugh Leersnyder

“It is incredibly worthwhile and rewarding delving into the environmental, social and economic issues of a project.”

Senior Environmental Specialist.

Hugh’s long-standing interest in the natural environment and outdoor activities translates to a passionate work ethic as a senior environmental scientist. Having amassed extensive experience in his 28-year career in environmental and resource management roles, Hugh has developed special competence in storm water systems, storm water quality and coastal management.

Prior to joining Beca in 2005, Hugh spent 17 years with the Auckland Regional Council. This has provided a strong platform for Beca-led projects in the region as he maintains a vital connection with the regional authority on contracted projects. “Being familiar with the ins and outs of the client as a previous employee gives me great confidence in providing Beca’s services” he says.

Hugh has relished the numerous opportunities he has been presented outside of his core expertise since the transition to the multidisciplinary company. “Within a few weeks of joining Beca, I was involved in air quality, odour management and runway and school upgrades in the Marshall Islands” Hugh says.

A project that has been significant for Hugh as well as for Beca is New Zealand Transport Agency’s Waterview Project. His contribution has included assisting with assessing the environmental impacts of the design and construction options for the missing link in Auckland’s motorway network. Other projects of interest include a feasibility study for alternative locations for vehicular ferries in the Auckland region and assessing a proposal for channel dredging and sediment disposal for the Pine Harbour Marina.
