"Beca's international offices gave me the opportunity to transfer and gain overseas experience."
Michael joined Beca as a structural engineer in 1998 after graduating from the University of Auckland. He joined Beca for the opportunities to work on large, interesting and significant projects with options to transfer to international offices for overseas experience.
His first three years at Beca saw him gain broad structural design experience on commercial, industrial and civil projects. Assisting with the seismic retrofit of AUT, a large educational facility, counted as a particular highlight because of the lateral thinking needed when working with old construction techniques and standards.
In 2001 Michael transferred to the Beca Singapore office where he worked for the next four years on a number of memorable projects including the Bedok and Kranji NEWater Plants projects, turning treated wastewater into drinkable water.
Six months permanently on site at Kranji as Resident Engineer introduced Michael to both the daily challenges of turning design into reality and to common construction techniques and issues in Asia.
In 2005, Michael worked in the Jakarta office completing the project work on Pacific Place started in Singapore. He also worked on Sampeorna Strategic Square and the British International School Theatre.
For the last two years, he has enjoyed the rewarding experience of managing the rapidly expanding Jakarta office, and been involved in promoting and growing Beca's remote resource operations in Indonesia.
