As a technical director and structural engineer in Beca buildings, David leads multi-disciplinary building project teams in New Zealand, South-East Asia and the Middle East. He is also an internationally recognised specialist in the design of seismic isolation systems.
With a technical background and PhD in earthquake engineering of offshore structures, David helped start up Beca’s structural engineering services in Singapore giving him a strong commercial background. This made him well equipped to deliver consulting services for all kinds of building projects. His hands-on design experience includes many large commercial projects such as office buildings, hotels, hospitals, airport terminals and shopping centres.
David has led Beca teams on a number of major projects such as a 60-storey hotel and office building in Dubai, various airport terminal projects in Wellington and Christchurch, the new Wellington regional hospital and several major shopping centres. He has also been involved in seismic isolation projects for large hospital and airport buildings around the world.
Finding great satisfaction in assisting with delivering world-class projects, David continues to broaden his experience locally and internationally. During his career with Beca he has engineered projects in over 25 countries.
He considers the three years he spent in the Beca Singapore office in the mid-90s as the most significant milestone in his career, giving him the experience of carrying out technical work to different international standards and enjoying new cultural experiences.
David regards a positive attitude and a “can-do” approach to problem-solving as essential to be effective as a consulting engineer; and fundamental to his successful career with Beca.
