An excellent example of how Beca provided a comprehensive range of services on a complex project, ranging from project management to architectural, environmental, fire and civil engineering.
The Department of Port Administration wanted to develop a new Hot Fire Training Facility (HFTF) at Pago Pago International Airport. The project involved:
- an aircraft 'mock-up' for simulated fire fighting
- a burn area around the mock-up to contain the fire and liquids, and provide space for vehicles and crew to manoeuvre
- a control building from where all fire simulations are monitored
- access roading and pavement areas
- electrical, telecommunications, power, water and related in ground services reticulation
- cooling and fire water system for supply to mock-up
- stormwater and wastewater system.
Beca was commissioned to provide consultancy services in planning, architecture, engineering and project management, and also supplied expertise in geotechnical, surveying, environmental reports and permit applications. An excellent example of how Beca provided a comprehensive range of services on a complex project.
The Environmental team carried out investigations and reports, particularly on the burn area, in order to obtain environmental consents; Beca Architects scoped and designed the control buildings; our Project Managers managed on-site contract administration and procurement for specialised equipment and consumables, as well as the overall project management of the design and implementation stages of the training facility works; and some of Beca's specialist engineers carried out HAZOP studies and risk management, fire engineering and infrastructure design.
The facility was completed in 2009 and complies with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for an Index C airport.
