Working alongside multiple parties, Beca assisted with a technically challenging design within tight timeframes of a site construction programme.
SP AusNet wanted to expand the 500kV Terminal Station at Rowville in Victoria with the installation of a second 1000MVA Transformer, associated circuit breakers and the upgrade of the existing switchyard to include a full breaker and a half scheme.
Beca provided the design services, working as part of a consortium with SP AusNet, Powercor and Civilpower, delivering a holistic design and build solution.
The design had to be constructed in multiple stages to adhere to a strict outage sequence agreed with the network operator. This allowed the work to be completed without disturbance to the Victoria transmission system.
The switchyard extension was designed to minimise the area required for the expansion, and consequently the amount of earth works undertaken by the Beca project team. By specifying tighter construction tolerances and a precise detailed design, Beca achieved the minimum electrical clearances and short flexible connections needed, reducing the distance required between equipment.
The design was completed as the initial phase of a larger project which includes a similar expansion at the Moorabool 500kV Terminal Station. Beca will again be providing the design services for this project as part of the same consortium.
