Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has an annual rolling programme of airfield pavement maintenance. The airport has engaged Beca to identify, plan, design, project manage and supervise the airfield pavement maintenance works since 2005. The works have been undertaken in a collaborative and innovative manner, resulting in successful outcomes for all parties.
Experienced airport personnel from Auckland, combined with design engineers from our local Christchurch office, carried out the following tasks:
- Preparation of topographic and site investigation survey briefs and undertaking topographic surveys.
- Visual inspection of airfield pavements and preparation of condition report and update of 20 Year Airfield Pavement Maintenance Plan.
- Preparation of a concept design report with budget costings.
- Detailed design and tender documentation of the airfield works.
- Development of Method of Work Plan.
- Development of Staging Plans.
- Negotiated and competitive tendering with local specialist asphalt paving contractors.
- Value Engineering and Risk Management.
- Daytime reconstruction of the Stands 27 and 34/35 with ICBP.
- Night-time construction monitoring of the resurfacing of parts of Runway 02-20 and Taxiways A and F including the use of RAP and Warm Mix asphalts on Taxiway A.
- Ongoing ad hoc airfield pavement maintenance advice.
- Ashphalt overlay of Runway 11-29.
New pavements have been constructed and existing pavements rehabilitated, meeting CIAL budget, quality, environmental, programme and safety standards - and with minimal disruption to airfield operations.
