Improving Auckland's Passenger Transport System
Britomart Centre is Auckland City's integrated transport interchange connecting the region's rail, bus and ferry services. It is a major gateway for access between the heart of the CBD and regional Auckland as well as the wider North Island rail services.
Beca was engaged to provide planning, geotechnical and full project management services on this complex project. A technically challenging site, the renovation of an historic landmark and managing a myriad of stakeholders were all key issues. This meant balancing functionality with aesthetic sensitivity, innovative engineering with restrictive operating conditions, history with development.
After managing the concept design, Beca led the successful resource consent application, providing a lead role in the assessment of environmental impacts of the proposed development. Through consultation and collaboration with consent authorities, consentswere granted without the need for Environment Court hearings.
Beca also supported the client’s extensive stakeholder consultation and the subsequent design competition to select the architect, took charge of the tendering process, managed the construction and provided contract administration services. The emphasis was on tight budget control and careful programme management within a highly political environment.
Pivotal to the successful completion of the project on time and within budget was a Partnering Charter. Facilitated by Beca, this agreement, was drawn up between consultants, client and contractor to help resolve issues quickly, avoiding additional costs and delays.
